Diagnostic ultrasound is used in sports medicine to evaluate musculoskeletal injuries to the subcutaneous tissue, fascia, muscle, tendons, joints, bones, ligaments, and nerves.
Diagnostic ultrasound has many advantages over other imaging modalities, including point of care access, real-time imaging, equipment portability, decreased cost for the patient, and lack of radiation.
The dynamic nature of this imaging modalities allows imaging of structures as patients move, thus allowing the recognition of pathology that could not be clearly depicted with static images.
